Cars is an animated film that was released in 2006 by Pixar Animation Studios for Walt Disney Pictures. The film takes place in a world where everyone and everything is an automobile. It follows an arrogant rookie racer Lightning McQueen, who is about to have the biggest race of his lifetime. Lighting McQueen, Chicks Hicks, and Strip Weathers all tie the last race for the Piston Cup, so the racing comity decides to have a final race winner takes all styles in California in a week. Lighting McQueen and Chicks Hicks are competing for sponsorship from Dinco, the biggest racing company, who are losing their current car Strip Weathers after the final race. Lighting McQueen wants to be the first to California to try and get the sponsorship, so he tells his driver to drive through the night. They both end up falling asleep and Lighting McQueen falls out the back of the car and ends up in a small town called Radiator Springs. He ends up destroying the road and is sentenced to fix the road. All he cares about is getting to California for the race and he tries to get out of it but does a bad job and is forced to redo it. It takes him the whole week to fix, but during his time there he learns to be more humble and nicer to others and befriends all of the cars that live there. When it comes to the final race, his new-found friends help him to do his best. However, on the last lap Chicks Hicks causes Strip Weathers to crash. Instead of winning the race, Lighting McQueen stops before crossing the finish line to help Strip Weathers finish his final race.
Cars is obviously an iconic movie, and many kids grew up watching it, including myself. However, now that I watch it again at an older age, I noticed a few things that I missed as a kid. One of those things was after the first race, the two twins flash their brights at McQueen, which would be the equivalent of human girls lifting up their shirts. As a kid, this just went over my head, and I didn't think much of it but now that I'm older it's shocking that they put that in a movie advertised for children.
Another thing that I thought about while watching the movie now that I was older was what do the animals look like in the Cars universe. We know that cows are tractors, a bull is a larger farming vehicle, and flies are tiny cars with wings. What do birds look like? Are they mini planes or smaller cars with wings? Also, what do fish look like? Are they mini boats or submarines or cars that can just swim? None of this really matters in the sense of the film and story, but it was just a random thought I had during the scene where Sally is showing McQueen the abandoned town.
